In addition to our focus on Kundalini Yoga , wealso teach Transformational Hatha Yoga according to the teachings of Swami Vidyanand. In this blog post, we would like to introduce you to the special power of Hatha Yoga , especially through the awakening and purification of the five Koshas – the five sheaths of human consciousness.

The five Koshas

In yogic philosophy, the human being is regarded as a unity of five different layers or sheaths, which are referred to as koshas. These koshas include the physical body, the energy sheath, the mental sheath, the wisdom sheath or sheath of true knowledge and the bliss sheath.

Transformational Hatha Yoga aims to awaken all five koshas, to elevate and transform the self through them . Those who recognize the levels of consciousness within themselves, recognizes the nature of the world and thus the divine.

Annamaya Kosha – The physical shell

The Annamaya Kosha is the outermost sheath and refers to the physical body. In Transformational Hatha Yoga, asanas (postures) are practiced, to strengthen, stretch and cleanse the body. Through the physical practice, blockages are released and the self self dissolves its identification with the body , This is the transformation of the body and the discovery of the subtle sheath, pranayama kosha. This practice is the basis for working on the finer koshas.

Pranamaya Kosha – The energy sheath

The pranamaya kosha refers to the life energy (prana) that flows through the body. Pranayama (breathing techniques) is a central element in Transformational Hatha Yoga, which aims to, to calm the flow of energy and release the consciousness from attachment to the energy. The energy is also strengthenedthrough targeted breathing exercises, which leads to greater vitality and an increased energy level.

Manomaya Kosha – The mental sheath

The Manomaya Kosha encompasses the mind and emotions. Brahmari – the expansion of the mind, as well as meditation and mindfulness exercises play a key role, to calm the mind and release mental attachments. Transformational Hatha Yoga promotes mental clarity and therefore emotional stability, by using techniques to calm the mind and transform negative thought patterns.

Vijnanamaya Kosha – The wisdom sheath

Anandamaya Kosha – The bliss sheath

The Anandamaya Kosha is the deepest sheath and represents the experience the experience of bliss and inner peace. Transformational Hatha Yoga strives to achieve this sheath through a holistic practice, that harmonizes all previous koshas. The experience of Anandamaya Kosha leads to a state of inner state of inner peace and deep joy, that goes beyond ordinary consciousness.
