Support During Educational Leave (Bildungskarenz)

Educational leave provides you with the wonderful opportunity to take between 2 and 12 months off work to fully concentrate on your yoga teacher training—without having to leave your job.

During your educational leave, you will receive a training allowance from the Public Employment Service Austria (AMS), equal to the amount of your unemployment benefit. Additionally, you’re permitted to earn extra income up to the marginal earnings limit of €500.91 per month. However, the AMS does not directly cover your training fees. For financial support toward training costs in Vienna, you can contact the WAFF (Vienna Employment Promotion Fund).

Requirements for Educational Leave:

  • An uninterrupted employment period of at least six months with your current employer, earning above the marginal earnings threshold.

  • Mutual agreement between you and your employer.

  • Fulfillment of eligibility requirements for unemployment benefits.

  • Participation in our training programs for at least 20 hours per week (or 16 hours per week for parents with children aged 7 or younger).

At Matsya Yoga, we offer a specially designed 300-hour yoga teacher training program at 20 hours per week, making it ideal for educational leave. A 200-hour training option may also be possible upon individual consultation.

How to Apply:

  • Discuss the possibility of educational leave with your employer.
  • Confirm all eligibility requirements and conditions with the AMS.
  • Obtain written confirmation from Matsya Yoga verifying your participation in our yoga training (at least 20 hours/week or 16 hours/week for parents of young children).
  • Submit your completed application for educational leave to the AMS.

Our yoga training programs can be completed independently or combined with other courses during your educational leave. Feel free to contact us or visit our studio; we are happy to discuss your individual goals and answer any questions.

For Vienna – Funding with WAFF

Who gets funded?

The prerequisite for funding your yoga teacher training is that you do not earn more than 2.500 euros net per month. You can then apply for the grant if these conditions are met:

  • Employment according to ASVG
  • on educational leave or educational part-time
  • on parental leave or hospice leave
  • New self-employed persons insured under the Commercial Social Insurance Act (pursuant to § 2 (1) Zif. 4 GSVG)

Important: At the time of application, your main place of residence must be in Vienna (confirmation of registration).

Funding volume:

The amount of funding for our yoga teacher trainings in Vienna depends on your net income as follows:

50 % of the course costs (net income up to 1,800 euros)
40 % of the course costs (net income up to 2,200 euros)
30 % of the course costs (net income up to 2,500 euros)

Support from the AMS

The promotion of adult education measures such as yoga teacher training by the AMS depends on how the AMS assesses the training as usable on the labor market.

The exception here is the business start-up program, as the usability is solely the decision of the funding recipient. However, it is always worthwhile for jobseekers to talk to their responsible AMS advisor to check possible support options for the course costs.

Funding opportunities through the AMS:

AMS qualification support for employees: This support is intended for low-skilled and older employees. Your employer can apply for this support on your behalf. The training must comprise at least 24 course hours (this is the case with us), and 50% of the course costs are reimbursed. You can find more information here.

AMS business start-up program: The AMS helps unemployed people to set up viable businesses and thus create jobs. If you take advantage of this start-up program, the AMS also covers 100 percent of the training costs. You can find more information here.

Promotion of personnel development: The AMS supports your employer in further developing its employees (i.e. you) through qualification measures. Your employer can apply for this on your behalf. You can find more information here.

For detailed information and inquiries about these funding opportunities, we recommend contacting the AMS directly.
